Truth & Reconciliation Day

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour the children who never returned home, survivors of residential schools, and their families.

In partnership with the City of Edmonton, the Indigenous Peoples Experience at Fort Edmonton Park will be open as a ticketed event on Tuesday, September 30, offering you an opportunity to learn the truths of Indigenous life before and after the formation of Canada.

Hours

  • 9:30 AM -10:30 AM | Opening Ceremony
    • Everyone is invited to attend the Opening Ceremony, but entry into the Indigenous Peoples Experience will only be permitted at your ticketed time.
  • 11:00 AM | Ticketed Access Begins
  • 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM | Indigenous Peoples Experience Hours

*Please note: only the Indigenous Peoples Experience will be open. All other attractions at Fort Edmonton Park will be closed. 

Admission:
Ages 12 & up: $5.00/guest
Ages 11 & under: FREE

Fort Edmonton Park is proud to formally partner with the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations and the Métis Nation of Alberta.
In the spirit of reconciliation and in honour of their crucial role in stewardship, storytelling, and shaping Amiskwaciwâskahikan/Edmonton, free admission is offered to all Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous guests may self-declare at the Box Office on the day of their visit or select tickets online in advance.

Other Information
Please park in our main lot. Guests will be transported to and from the Indigenous Peoples Experience by shuttle bus due to construction on-site. There is NO charge for transportation.

Food and Beverage will be available for purchase on-site near the Indigenous Peoples Experience.

No Strollers or Wagons will be allowed on the shuttles or within the Indigenous Peoples Experience.

Proceeds from admission will support the continued development of Indigenous educational programming at Fort Edmonton Park. Thank you for your support. 

Session Information and Schedule

The Indigenous Peoples Experience is honoured to host five sessions throughout the day at no additional cost to guests. You may add one session to your ticket at the time of purchase. There are limited seats available for each session.

Opening Ceremoney | 9:30 am | Front Entry
Join us for the Opening Ceremony as we come together in reflection and respect for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The ceremony will honour Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home, while reminding us of our shared responsibility to listen, learn, and walk the path of reconciliation together.

Balance "miyo-mahcihoyān" | 11:00 am & 1:00 pm (45 minutes each)

Host: Kyle M. Campiou

Honouring our past by healing our future together. Working forward from the "ideal to actual" with the effects of pre-colonization, colonization and post-colonization. How we work to bring traditional ceremonies to non-traditional spaces in the city of Edmonton. The experiences and work of an urban Kihci-oskâpêwaw or Indigenous Cultural Spiritual Advisor Helper to give space and opportunities to practice ceremony and heal together with everyone, all together, every nation, all allies and all denominations and all religions, willing and wanting of community and connection. 

Inuit Residential School Experience | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Location: Indigenous People's Experience, Multi-Purpose Room #1 & 2
Host: Elder Connie Kananyok McCrae & Jaynine McCrae 

Connie Kanayok McCrae is a retired professional legal interpreter. She was born on Lambert Island in the Arctic region of Canada. She was raised in a traditional Inuit lifestyle and learned to drum dance at a young age. Her family was relocated to the community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut and the children were sent to a residential school. When she returned to Kugluktuk, she had to relearn her language, but didn’t start drum dancing again until the age of 70, when she wanted to teach her daughter, Jaynine. Both now live and work in amiskwaciwâskahikan.

Healing Circle | 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Indigenous People's Experience, Multi-Purpose Room #3
Host: Chantelle Hurshman Gray

I will be sharing part of my story as the first descendant in my Matriarchal line to not attend a Residential school, and the impacts of not being raised with my Culture.  I will then share how the plants and connecting to Culture and stories helped me heal and make sense of what my family went through. Then I would like to open up the Circle to anyone who would like to share. 

Trials and Tribulations of being a Sixties Scoop Survivor | 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Location: 
Indigenous People's Experience Multi-Purpose Room #1 & 2
Host: Lorraine Champagne & Daniel Campbell

Discover what it was like growing up as a Sixties Scoop Survivor, how it has affected their lives, and the ways they have coped with their losses, while gaining a deeper understanding of those losses, the emotions they created, and how they have shaped who they are today.

Are tickets available at the gate?
Limited tickets are available at the Front Entry Gate. We recommend purchasing online in advance to avoid disappointment.

Daily admissions tickets are as follows:

Adult (12+)                                 $5.00
Child/Youth (11 & Under)              FREE

Do I need a printed copy of my ticket or can I show it on my smartphone?
Either is fine.

Can I use my Fort Edmonton Park membership to attend Truth and Reconciliation Day?
No, memberships are not valid for this special event. All proceeds from Truth and Reconciliation Day support the continued development of Indigenous educational programming at Fort Edmonton Park. We kindly ask all guests to contribute the $5 admission fee in support of this important initiative.

Are tickets refundable?
Tickets are non-refundable.

What should I do if I have not received a booking confirmation email?
Please check your spam folder. If it’s not there, please send an email to info@fortedmontonpark.ca.

I want to bring a large group, are there discounts?
There are no group discounts or bookings available for September 30, 2025. Our sales team would be happy to assist with your group booking for another date. They can be reached at sales@fortedmontonpark.ca

What types of payments do you take?
We are happy to accept Visa, Mastercard, Interac and Cash.

THE EXPERIENCE
Are the train and streetcars running?
No, the streetcar or the train are not running. We do have a FREE shuttle to transport visitors to the experience from the Front Entry. 

Are Strollers allowed within the Indigenous Peoples Experience?
Due to the large number of guests expected to shuttle down and visit the Indigenous Peoples Experience, we ask guests not to bring strollers or wagons with them on their visit. They will have to be left at your vehicle or on our train platform for your return.

Do I need to book the Free Shuttle? 
No, there's no need to book the Free Shuttle service. Simply enter through our Front Entry Plaza and follow the signs to the pick-up location past Admissions. The Free Shuttle runs on a loop throughout the day. 

Are there gift shops or restaurants open?
No, the Front Entry Gift Shop & Cafe will be closed.

Will any buildings be open?
Only the Indigenous Peoples Experience will be open on September 30, 2025. Please note, that the remaining buildings within Fort Edmonton Park are not open to the Public during your experience. 

GENERAL
Is parking available?
Yes, parking is available in our main Parking Lot.  

How do you get there?
Take Fox Drive to Fort Edmonton Park Road and follow the road into the Park. There are many city streets in the vicinity that have signs that direct to Fort Edmonton Park.

Is smoking allowed?
Fort Edmonton Park is smoke-free.

Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available across the site.
