Field Trips at Fort Edmonton Park

Although the public season may be coming to an end, there is still lots going on at Fort Edmonton Park. The Education team is heading into the field trip season!

Let’s hear from one of our Education Interpreters who leads our school programs;

“For the last 3 years, I have worked as an Education Interpreter leading field trips within the park which has allowed me to further explore and foster my love of history beyond the work I have done over the summer. But, what exactly does a field trip at the park look like? Fort Edmonton Park’s education programs allow a fun and engaging way for students, teachers and families to learn about the expansive history of Edmonton, through hands-on activities and stories. By booking a program, you are welcomed into an experience the Park in a new way, guided through the past by one of the Education Interpreters. Your class has a one-on-one experience, curated to suit both student interest and curriculum connections”.

There are two ways to experience the Park as a class:

October to April, Monday to Friday, and May/June on Mondays and Tuesdays are our ‘No Park Access’ season. These are guided programs only and do not include General Admission to Fort Edmonton Park (the Park is closed to the public during these dates).

On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from after the May long weekend to the end of June is our ‘Park Access’ days. Each program is led by our Education Interpreters and includes General Admission access to Fort Edmonton Park, allowing students to engage with history both through guided experiences and free discovery.

In our Indigenous Peoples Experience programs, students are led through our award-winning Indigenous Peoples Experience exhibit by a member of our Indigenous Education Interpreter team. Students will explore Indigenous cultures and histories through immersive learning, using themes such as land-based learning, relationships and concepts of balance.

In our 1846 Fort programs, step inside 1846 at the Hudson’s Bay Company Fort and Cree Encampment. Students will explore the fur trade economy, daily life in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton), and the diverse communities shaping the region. Each program includes interactive tours and hands-on activities.

In our Pioneer/Settlement programs, explore early Edmonton and experience the challenges and choices of pioneer life. Students explore history through hands-on activities that highlight imagination, problem-solving, and connection to their own lives.

In our tour programs, we have 2 programs to discover: Our Past, My Story for our younger learners, students explore the daily lives of children in Edmonton’s past—what they ate, how they played, and how families lived. Indigenous narratives are woven throughout the program. For our older learners, Around Edmonton takes classes on a journey through all four eras of Fort Edmonton Park—from the fur trade to post-World War I. Students engage with stories from Edmonton’s history and from time immemorial, making connections between their own lives and those in the past.
