You will be responsible to:

  • Ensure animal husbandry and historical content is maintained
  • Ensure welfare of all livestock on site, including maintenance and care of al livestock and pens
  • Purchasing and training of livestock, especially horses for all program use
  • Determine scheduling of animal care ferriers, breeding services, veterinary services, sheep shearing, seasonal animal leases
  • Equipment operation and maintenance
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and coach employees for year-round animal care and ride services
  • Provide front-line supervision and mentoring to all staff in the Animal Welfare unit
  • Monitor and evaluate staff performance and attendance
  • Review and update standards, productivity, service levels, unit costs and task accomplishments and make recommendations for improvements
  • Provide exceptional customer service, and respond to and resolve citizen concerns
  • Organize and lead programs and services for the public season, booking and event rentals
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with citizens, partners and event organizers
  • Liaise with various city sections, branches and departments related to livestock activities and concerns, including events, programs, bookings, maintenance, repair, safety and security
  • Complete related administrative tasks associated with staff and site responsibilities
  • Ensure work is completed within safety standards, and respond to any safety-related issues or concerns
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications :

  • 2 year Diploma in Equine Science, Animal Health Technology, Animal-Science Technology, Agribusiness, Agriculture Management, Horticulture, or a related discipline
  • 3 years of related experience working with various farm animals including horses; 5 years experience working with horses, including training and harnessing horses for wagons would be an asset
  • 2000 hours experience driving teams of horses
  • General knowledge of large animals, different animal training styles and Western Canadian History as it relates to agricultural practices
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability
  • Ability to implement and assign work plans
  • Completion of leadership training is an asset
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to use computer software including Google applications and SAP
  • Excellent customer service, communication, interpersonal, organizational, time management, problem solving and prioritization skills required
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position
  • Ability to drive a truck with a trailer attached
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent upon a vulnerable Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Flexible availability with shifts as needed due to nature of work

Hours: 40 hours per week. This position is subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work schedule. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Salary: $35.925 (Hourly); $75, 011.40 (Annually)
