The Capitol Theatre Re-Creation

The Fort Edmonton Management Company is proud to announce the first of many projects for Fort Edmonton Park. The Capitol Theatre will be a re-creation of the 1920's theatre located on Jasper Avenue and 100 Street. The re-creation will be a 250 seat theatre.

The intent is to re-create the former Jasper Avenue façade following the restoration in 1929. Internally, the building will incorporate modern construction methods, but balance issues such as building code and the necessary technical infrastructure with historical authenticity.

Construction on the Capitol Theatre began in the summer of 2010 and is projected to be completed by mid-summer, 2011.

During the summer season, the Capitol Theatre will be presenting a multi-media short film entitled "Northern Light." Included in the daily admission price, this astonishing short film focuses on Edmonton's dynamic history and will be unlike anything ever seen in Western Canada.

There are numerous other usage opportunities during the September to May off-season, particularly in the area of the Arts. The 250 seat Capitol Theatre can be utilized for live theatre productions, local film festivals, children's festivals as well as be a venue for corporate meetings, weddings, children's programming, concerts and Annual General Meetings.

Live Theatre

The new Capitol Theatre presents an opportunity for local artists to utilize this space in a "bring your own theatre" format to showcase their work. One of the key mandates of the Fort Edmonton Management Company is to make the Capitol Theatre available as a facility to develop and showcase local Alberta actors and technicians in a unique but modern state-of-the-art facility right here in Edmonton.

To that end, the Capitol Theatre will be launching its 2011 live theatre Fall Subscription Series beginning in September of 2011. This three-play Series will be produced by Edmonton's Twenties Street Productions, who plan to strike a balance between family friendly classics and innovative new Canadian works, with an emphasis on local casting and community-targeted work.

A fun and familiar classic show suitable for all audiences will open the season in mid-September. This hilarious and fast-paced comedy will entertain everyone from theatre lovers to families.

An exciting addition to the Fall Subscription Series leading up to Halloween, this is a new musical comedy by Twenties Street's award winning resident Playwright who has roots in the Edmonton community.
