Birthday Party Preparation

Interpreter Contact
The interpreter assigned to lead your program will contact you a few days prior to your party to confirm details with you. If you have not heard from your interpreter and have questions about your program, please call the program coordinator at 780-496-8782.

Group Size

The maximum number of people (including parents and siblings) for your party is 20. At least 2 adults are required to stay with your group and assist with supervision.

Special Needs

Please inform your interpretive guide, in advance of the program, about children with:

  • Physical disabilities
  • Medical concerns, including allergies

Program content and activity locations can be changed to include children with special needs.

Clothing

Please be prepared to spend time outdoors; advise party guests to dress appropriately for the weather. A portion of the program will be conducted outdoors. Your interpretive guide may allow for more indoor time during inclement weather.

Facility Guidelines

Fort Edmonton Park is a museum, so please review acceptable museum behavior before the party-goers arrive on site. At Fort Edmonton Park we encourage children to speak at a conversational level. Running is not allowed either inside or outside of our buildings. The artifacts on display are for viewing only. The interpretive guide will grant permission if certain artifacts can be touched. We ask that all visitors respect boundaries such as ropes, fences and signs to protect sensitive areas and to keep the kids safe. Fort Edmonton Park's interpreters are not responsible for disciplining children. This is the responsibility of the adult supervisors who come with the group.

What to Bring

There are no additional supplies needed for the planned activities.

Parking

Food

You are responsible for supplying all food, beverages, plates and utensils for your party. Fort Edmonton Park has fridges available at some birthday locations, but not all. Egge's Stopping House, Henderson house, Mellon Farm House, and the Ukrainian Bookstore do have fridges. Reed's Tea Room, Reed's Bazaar, and Clerk's Quarters do not have fridges.

Fort Edmonton Park has very specific guidelines for party and event food services. Please follow these guidelines, found below:

  • Birthday Parties with a program component can bring in a cake as well as small snacks and drinks (i.e. fruit/veggie tray, cheese tray, chips and cheezies, pop, water etc.).
  • You cannot bring in any sort of prepared meal. This means no pizza, sandwiches, BBQ's, crock pots, hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, Chinese food etc.
  • Potlucks and all use of unauthorized outside catering is no longer permitted in the park. For all prepared meals you must go with one of our exclusive caterers. For Birthday Parties, Royal Treats and the Hotel Selkirk are good options as they can easily manage smaller events. See our list of authorized caterers or alternatively you can get catering from the Hotel Selkirk from the details below.

  • Banners

Please be advised that the following are not permitted:

  • Balloons
  • Items needing to be tacked or nailed to walls

If you have any questions about materials you wish to bring to your party, please discuss with your interpreter when they call you prior to your party.
