Hardware stores in the 1880's sold a lot of the same items that
you'd find at your local Home Depot today - door hardware, screws,
nails, locks and stoves were popular purchases.
The original Ross Brothers Hardware was built in 1884 near
what is now Jasper Ave and 98 Street. It was opened by James
"Charlie" Ross and his brother Frederick. The two had travelled to
Edmonton from Toronto via Winnipeg. The brothers both had a varied
work history that included some experience in tinsmithing.
Coincidentally, Ross was one of the most common surnames in the
settlement at the time.
James worked as a firefighter and carpenter after moving to
Edmonton and eventually served four terms as an alderman. Frederick
was said to have been the more entrepreneurial of the two and he
eventually became the president of their company.
The store you see at Fort Edmonton Park is a re-creation of
how the original could have appeared between 1886 and 1890. The
original also contained a tinsmithing shop and a warehouse was
eventually added.
In late 1888 or 89 the second floor of the original store was
converted to a public hall, at which vaudeville shows, plays and
balls were held. The Rosses were thus early proponents of live
theatre in Edmonton, a tradition that continues today with the
Fringe and vibrant arts scene.
The Ross Brothers Hardware building was eventually demolished
in 1911.
