Walter Ramsay built the first greenhouse in Northern Alberta.
His work helped develop the horticultural community in
Edmonton.
Ramsay built a small greenhouse at the back of his home in 1906
and eventually built four more to keep up with demand. He
eventually had fifty thousand square feet under glass.
A large portion of his greenhouse space was dedicated to roses and
carnations. These were his favourite flowers and found their way
into many of the bouquets he created.
Ramsay was involoved in both the retail and wholesale sides of the
floral business. He provided flowers and arrangements year round
and offered an order service to towns accross the province.
Ramsay's annual Good Friday Open House was a popular event that
drew hundreds of people eager to buy and view the spring
inventory.
Business was booming but it wasn't without its problems. The first
five of Ramsay's greenhouses collapsed during a snowstorm in 1935.
WWII created delivery problems for seeds and bulbs coming from the
Netherlands.
Walter Ramsay passed away in 1959 and his business was handed over
to his son.
