Profile – Reverend Robert Rundle

Robert_RundleWho was he?
Reverend Rundle became the first missionary on the western plains. He was assigned to minister to the natives in the area.

What did he do?
Rundle conducted marriage ceremonies, baptisms and eventually learned enough Cree and Assiniboine to conduct services in the languages. He travelled extensively throughout the area and introduced many Natives to the practice of agriculture. In addition, Rundle was also involved in attempts to set up a school in Edmonton.
His legacy
Although plans for a school for Native children never became a reality, Rundle did his best to bring learning to wherever he went. His teachings often focused on spiritual matters, and reading and writing the new Cree syllabics.
At the Park
Be on the lookout for Rundle House and Chapel while exploring the 1846 Fort. This was his home base for 5 years starting in 1843.
